A Massachusetts State Police recruit who died from a “medical crisis” during a training exercise on Thursday was sworn in as a trooper just hours before his death, according to state police.
Worcester resident Enrique Delgado-Garcia, 25, died after becoming unresponsive during a defensive tactics training exercise at the Massachusetts State Police Academy in New Braintree, state police said previously. An on-site medical team treated him before rushing him to UMass Memorial Medical Center in an ambulance, but he died at the hospital.
Delgado-Garcia joined the 90th Recruit Training Troop in April, which is set to graduate on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the DCU Center in Worcester, state police said. Just hours before he died, a police department commissioner delivered the recruit’s oath of office.
“He was surrounded by family, loved ones, and classmates during the bi-lingual ceremony, which culminated in him being pinned with his Trooper Badge,” state police wrote in a press release.
Delgado-Garcia’s body was moved from the hospital to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Boston Saturday evening, state police said. He was accompanied by a procession.
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healy released a statement on Delgado-Garcia’s death on Saturday.
“I’m heartbroken about the loss of Massachusetts State Police Trainee Enrique Delgado-Garcia, who had committed himself to a career protecting the people of Massachusetts. He was a beloved member of his academy class, known for his compassion and devotion to service,” the statement reads. “This is a devastating time for all who knew and loved him, and we are holding Enrique’s family and his State Police community in our hearts.”
Before joining state police, Delgado-Garcia worked as a victim advocate at the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police Col. John Mawn Jr. said in a statement.
“In his short time with the State Police, Enrique demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to learn and a desire to deliver excellent police services to the people of Massachusetts. He made an immediate impression on his classmates and the Academy Staff,” Mawn said. “By all accounts, Enrique possessed and displayed all the qualities that would have made him an outstanding Trooper: kindness and compassion, dedication, commitment, willingness to work hard to improve himself, and a strong desire help others.”
No further information about Delgado-Garcia’s death has been released.
